Album Review:
Not long ago the Moodgadget label gave us a reminder of Casino Versus Japan's sizable contribution to the field of electronica, reissuing the eponymous debut from 1998. Now, Attacknine delves even further, presenting a collection of twenty previously unreleased works from the CVsJ archive. These tracks date back to 2002, when Attacknine co-founder (and member of the duo Freescha) Nick Huntington was sent a five-disc collection of recordings by CVsJ producer Erik Kowalski. Some of this material made it out into the public domain via the 2004 release Hitori+Kaiso, but the tracks presented here have never been available before, representing Kowalski's darker and more atmospheric compositions. There's a healthy amount of more abstract and beatless pieces lined up on this album, with beautiful analogue tonal exercises like 'The Flow Of No Go' and 'Lake' giving a very organic take on drone-based soundscaping. Elsewhere, you'll uncover such gems as the remarkable 'Imaginary Short Wave Reception', which sounds like some sort of collaboration between Boards Of Canada and Tod Dockstader, and 'Love Life', whose luscious, melodious crackle sounds like a more tuneful take on Janek Schaefer's vinyl-based experiments. Beats are still very much a part of the Casino Versus Japan sound on this release however, and tracks like the frantic, overdriven 'One Small Step Version' and 'Skitwise With Charles Wyatt' mark the return of Kowalski's uniquely warm and fuzzy beat-crafting style - the latter adding some luminous, nocturnal guitar tones to the mix. Another very special collection from this singular artist, if you've never heard any Casino Vs Japan before - now is your time. Highly Recommended.

Casino Versus Japan:
is the recording name for Erik Kowalski , a United States-based electronic musician. He started with recorded episodes of Miami Vice, sampling Jan Hammer's music, sampling and playing them over the backdrop of other musical genres. More samples were collected from a range of sources and mixed with other homemade recordings. Kowalski taught himself piano in high school, along with guitar and drums, and began putting together simple songs.
Recording guitar-based, ambient/experimental music as Radiogate in 1996 and 1997, Kowalski matured in the underground electronic music community in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He worked at Atomic Records and also wrote for the alternative fanzine Milk Magazine to stay informed on developments within many styles of innovative music. In early 1998, he approached Mike Bailey of the local electronic label Star Star Stereo with some demo tapes, and shortly thereafter, released his self titled debut Casino Versus Japan. This subsequently led to live performances (including several dates opening for Low) with Charles Wyatt (Charles Atlas) accompanying Kowalski on guitar. In January 2000, Go Hawaii was released on CD by Wobblyhead (later on double-vinyl LP by City Centre Offices, 2001). By the summer of 2002, the track "It's Very Sunny" was used in a Hummer television commercial. His third album Whole Numbers Play The Basics, followed in September, 2002 on Carpark Records. The song "Manic Thru Tone" was used in MTV's "Choose Or Lose" campaign in the fall of 2002. In 2004, a collection of outtakes and unreleased tracks, Hitori + Kaiso 1998-2001, appeared, as well as a split EP with the California duo Freescha.
